Available for the first time since 1976, the official reissue of Sid Lovejoy’s roots missile “King Kong Man” is here! 50 years on, Sid’s rallying cry to stand up to tyrants, bullies and oppressors is as relevant as ever. Bursting out of the gate with psychedelic lead guitar, the track pares down to roots militancy followed by a monstrous Channel One dub.Originally released on Toronto label G Clef, this is the toughest of the numerous “King Kong” versions.
In 1975 Sid recorded the first version of “King Kong Man” in Toronto on his own Lovejoy Music Productions label. The soulful reggae track had little impact in Canada, and, according to Gleaner Newspaper at the time “caused as much noise as a snow flake falling on water”. Disappointed, Sid, returned to Jamaica to hone his vision with some of Jamaica’s finest session musicians and engineers, visiting Channel One, Treasure Isle, and King Tubby's studio, resulting in a much rootsier sound.
